Just as we buy a new outfit or sculpt our bodies at the gym, we are all interested in improving our function and appearance in a myriad of ways. In that spirit, we offer a variety of cosmetic procedures, some of which are listed here.

Botox is a purified derivative of botulinum toxin. When appropriately injected, it temporarily causes relaxation of targeted muscles. Since repeated muscular contractions over time results in wrinkles, relaxation of those muscles can soften or erase facial lines.

Common areas injected include forehead lines, the glabella (the spot between the eyebrows where lines frequently form the number “11”, causing frown lines), crow’s feet, bunny lines across the bridge of the nose, and wrinkles across the upper lip. Botox can also be used to create a medical brow lift. Injections take just a few minutes and are fairly comfortable. The effect typically takes about 5 days after the injection to become apparent, and lasts about 3-4 months for most people; it may be repeated as necessary.

Dermal Fillers

The most common skin filler is Juvederm, but there are many others as well. Fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, the same material that makes up the connective tissue in our bodies. When injected under the skin, it fills hollows and minimizes deep lines typically located on the lower half of the face.

Areas amenable to filler therapy include the nasolabial folds (the creases between the nose and the mouth), marionette lines, jowls, and the parentheses the border the lips. Filler shows immediately, which makes it instantly gratifying – but it may leave some temporary bruising; we therefore recommend its use at least 4-5 days prior to any important affair. The effect often lasts a year or more and may be repeated as necessary.

With childbirth or with the passage of time, the vaginal opening may dilate open, leading to less satisfying sensations with intercourse. Tightening the opening often improves these symptoms. Medically referred to as an “anterior and posterior vaginal colporrhaphy,” a vaginoplasty is performed under anesthesia in the hospital setting, often on an ambulatory basis. Simultaneously, a “perineoplasty” can be performed, adding to the strength and breadth of the tissue located between the vagina and anus.

Some women find that excessive labial tissue can cause discomfort during intercourse. Others may find the appearance of this tissue to be unpleasant. A labioplasty reduces and customizes the amount of tissue to provide more satisfying esthetics and function. This is also performed under anesthesia in the hospital setting, typically on an ambulatory basis.
